FCPS seems to recognize that Pornography creates a crisis for adolescents and therefore has dedicated an entire class to the topic.
Below is the lesson plan for 9th Grade SEL class on Pornography. It is an example of how FLE/SEL when provided in a value-free public-school setting has the potential of causing more harm than good. The mere occasion of discussing pornography for 45 minutes will create an “occasion of sin” for some students who have been exposed to pornography (either voluntarily or involuntarily) as images will recur during the discussion.
Note that while concerns are raised about the issue of pornography, such as exploitation, it is couched in terms of consent and legality. The scenarios discussing “consent” presume that the participating pre-adolescents/adolescents are developmentally capable of giving “consent”. That presumption is not provided in other areas of life for that age group.
There is no discussion of the dignity of the human person and/or the proper expression of sexuality in marriage as determined by God. It is hard to imagine that any thinking adult sees early exposure to pornography as anything other than Sexual Trauma.
