Opt Your Child Out of Family Life Education in Fairfax County

Are you aware that your 5th grader (6th, 7th, and 8th grader) can choose to either go to the boys or girls class on puberty and the school does not have to consult with you?

Are you aware that despite parents’ overwhelming objections (84% oppose), the School Board approved a pilot program at 10 elementary schools and 4 middle schools with a goal of ending stop sex-separated sensitive classes in Human Growth and Development? FCPS Superintendent Michele Reid claimed “the majority doesn’t always dictate.”

Are you aware that they introduce LGBTQIA+ and gender choices in kindergarten and every grade level after?

Are you aware that every year child abuse prevention (Good Touch, Bad Touch) classes are provided and a warning to teachers states:

Do you want a kindergarten teacher (or any teacher) teaching you child topics that may traumatize him? Given the bias expressed by FCPS Administrators and Board Members that they believe they must protect children from their parents, justifying their secrecy around treatment of students identifying as “transgender” do you trust the counselor’s “interpretation” of your child’s sensitivity to the topic of abuse?

Are you aware that the School Board axed the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee that required community accessibility and input and instead put it under the Superintendent where there will be no community review?

Program Objectives by Grade for Family Life Education/Social Emotional Learning and Human Growth and Development. What is Social Emotional Learning and is it consistent with Catholic Family values?

In addition to these explicit topics, content from so-called “Critical Race Theory” is usually embedded in Social Emotional Learning.  In 2019, the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) (umbrella for SEL curricula) embraced what it calls “Transformative SEL.” Transformative SEL takes the previously morally neutral core competencies and infuses them with CRT-derived values. However, opting children out of SEL will not protect them from the CRT virus which is infused into all subjects as part of FCPS commitment to JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion).

An analysis of the content and the appropriateness from a child development point of view can be found at ParentandChild.org.

You can opt your child out of some or all Family Life Education, Social and Emotional Learning and Human Growth and Development Classes. Each grade level has a separate Opt-Out Form that lists all of the lessons. Fairfax County Public Schools Family Life Education Opt-Out Forms
